  1. zebraface says:

the reason why sperm cells survive at low temperature is because of suspended animation. not only sperm cells survive at extreme temperatures, but also other cells. suspended animation is the slowing of life processes by external means without termination. yes, you may think that nothing will survive at freezing temperature, but that’s not true. many microscopic organisms and cells survive in freezing climates. they do not stop their biological function; they simply slow down as to not use all of their biophysical energy.

sperm cells, like most cells, survive freezing climates because of this. they also secrete an antifreeze-like substance, which enables them to slow down, but not completely freeze.

  2. Purple Moogle says:

Single celled life is able to survive quite easily while frozen as they basically are just frozen in place and when they thaw, their chemical mechanisms reactivate and they return to typical function.

It’s because they are mainly reactionary lifeforms, where as complex multi-cellular life forms with blood and brains and such require constant electrical activity to retain brain and cadiovascular activity.

  3. devil's advocate says:

purple moogle you’re an idiot if the cell was frozen solid the ice crystals would tear apart the cell walls.
